Acupuncture

What is Acupuncture?

Traditional acupuncture is one of the complementary practices that makes up the system of Chinese Medicine (CM). A treatment with a well-tested reputation for safety, acupuncture uses hair-fine needles to stimulate specific points on the body to affect change. In CM this process is thought to encourage a healing response, with points chosen according to the practitioner's diagnosis of the blockages or imbalances that might underlie a patient's symptoms.

Does Acupuncture hurt?

The needles we use are very fine, much finer than needles used to take blood or to give injection so discomfort is minimal. When the needles are in place you may feel a warm tingling sensation or dull ache. Most people find the acupuncture a relaxing pleasant experience and many fall asleep during the session.

Should my doctor know?

If you have been prescribed medication, we recommend you tell your doctor that you are planning to have acupuncture. Do not stop taking your medication. You should always tell your acupuncturist about any medication and supplements you are taking as this may affect your response to the acupuncture treatment. BAcC acupuncturists are trained to recognise potentially serious underlying health conditions and may refer you to your GP if they consider it appropriate.

How many sessions will I need?

Frequency and number of sessions depend on your individual condition and the treatment you have booked in for. Many people choose to have regular sessions to maintain good health.

What can it do for me?

Some people turn to acupuncture for help with a specific symptom or condition. Others choose to have treatment to help maintain good health, as a preventive measure, or simply to improve their general sense of wellbeing. Because traditional acupuncture aims to treat the whole person rather than specific symptoms in isolation, it can be effective for a range of conditions. Remember that acupuncturists treat the person, not just the condition which they have, so each patient’s treatment plan will be different. However, you can always ask your practitioner about other patients’ experiences, to give you an idea of what to expect. Many people return to acupuncture again and again because they find it so beneficial and relaxing.

What conditions can acupuncture be used to treat?

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO) acupuncture can be used to treat a wide variety of conditions. Your TCM practitioner will advise you about what aspects of your health he or she thinks may respond well to acupuncture – anecdotal evidence suggests it can be helpful for everything from depression to earache. However, there are some strong indications based on meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials that acupuncture is an effective treatment for nausea and vomiting, chronic back pain, migraine, neck pain, post-operative pain, knee osteoarthritis, fertility and IVF support.

Can everyone be treated with acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a safe treatment for patients of any age, even babies.

Is acupuncture safe?

Extensive surveys have found no significant adverse reactions, and the volume of unproblematic acupuncture treatments carried out in the UK every day confirms that it is an extremely low-risk procedure.

Chinese Medicine

What is Chinese Medicine?

Chinese Medicine (CM) has been practiced in China for over 3,000 years. But this long history doesn't mean CM is either simplistic or backward in comparison to modern biomedicine. Sustained by centuries of empirical clinical evidence, CM has evolved into a complete and highly-nuanced system that offers a coherent alternative to the Western medicine's view of how and why we get ill. CM is still used as primary healthcare in much of South-East Asia; and in state hospitals throughout China, it enjoys an equal and pragmatic relationship with the newer system of Western orthodox medicine.

Chinese Medicine is based on a Daoist understanding of the human body as a system of finely balanced connections, and one closely linked to and influenced by its environment. This holistic principle forms the foundation of a set of complementary practices that together comprise the CM system: herbal medicine, acupuncture (including cupping, gua sha and moxibustion), lifestyle advice and dietary therapy, massage techniques (Tui Na) and movement disciplines (Tai Chi and Qi Gong). Designed not only to cure but also to prevent illness, these practices share a focus on re-establishing or supporting harmony, balance and order in the body.

Although Chinese Medicine operates outside of an established biomedical understanding of why we get ill, it's become increasingly popular in the UK since its introduction into the West in the 1970s. Many people now choose CM as a trusted alternative or compliment to standard medical treatments. Herbal remedies and acupuncture in particular are now commonly used to treat a wide range of medical issues, including pain and musculoskeletal conditions, digestive disorders, skin problems, allergies, stress and infertility. Patients' reports of the positive results they've achieved with CM in tackling chronic conditions as well as minor ailments, plus an increasing number of encouraging scientific studies into its effectiveness, are also winning a growing respect for CM among Western-style doctors.

In contrast to Western-style medicine, the treatments of Chinese Medicine are always tailored to the individual, and in response to the whole person (the mind and spirit as well as the body). Practitioners diagnose on the basis of not only a medical history and physical observations – including looking at someone's skin, taking their pulse, and checking the condition and colour of their tongue – but also on answers to questions about how their patient is feeling. According to individual needs, a single CM practice or combination of practices (e.g. a course of herbal medicine that runs alongside a series of acupuncture sessions) is used in treatments, with symptoms viewed as indications of an underlying condition rather than something to be dealt with in isolation.

Chinese Herbal medicine

What is Chinese herbal medicine?

Chinese herbal medicine is a system of medicine which uses various remedies derived from plants, flowers, trees and roots to harmonise imbalances in the body and treat illness. Often five or more Chinese herbs are made up to make one formula. Formulas are usually made into decocted teas or made into powders or pills to be ingested. When prescribed by a certified herbal medicine practitioner, Chinese herbal medicine is a safe, effective and natural way to treat a wide array of health-related conditions.

Do treatments use ingredients taken from endangered animals or plants?

We have always condemned the illegal trade in endangered animal and plant species, and herbalists in the UK are subject to strict rules that prohibit the use of any material with an unethical source. Our professional body also actively supports organisations such as Animals Asia (which campaigns against animal cruelty and promotes the message of ‘Healing Without Harm’).

Can everyone be treated with Chinese Herbal Medicine?

People of any age or constitution can benefit from treatment with CHM – from babies to the elderly, including those who are suffering significant health issues.

How is CHM given?

The herbal prescriptions of CHM are administered in a number of different ways. Most commonly, prescriptions are taken in the form of a tea (to be made up from raw herbs or concentrated powders) or as a ready-made formula in tablets. External preparations are also used, including creams, ointments and washes for skin conditions, and compresses for traumatised tissue. Chinese herbal teas do tend to be bitter, but most patients get used to them quickly.

Is CHM safe?

Serious adverse effects from being treated with CHM are very rare, and as a discipline it has a very good safety record. However, the fact that CHM treatments are 'natural' does not offer a 100 per cent guarantee there will be no side effects. It is therefore essential that you are treated by a practitioner who:

- is trained to a high standard

- practices in compliance with a professional code of practice

- will monitor each case carefully to check for and mitigate unusual reactions

- uses suppliers that are committed to quality and ethical standards

How long does a course of CHM treatment last?

The length of treatment will vary greatly depending on the condition. Anything between one and six months would be common, though in certain cases treatment may last quite a bit longer. Your practitioner should tell you how long you might need to take the herbs/apply a cream, etc. before they can assess how effective treatment has been.

Lifestyle advice and dietary therapy

In Chinese Medicine, having the right habits in terms of how one lives and, crucially, how one eats, is a central aspect of maintaining good health. Following ideas and principles built up over centuries, a CM practitioner can advise patients how to say healthy – mentally as well as physically – by adopting Chinese principles that offer guidance on eating, exercise, sleeping, drinking alcohol, etc. This 'do it yourself' element of CM (expressed in simple changes such as learning to stop eating before you feel full) is an important and empowering means for patients to promote their own wellbeing in the longer term.

Movement therapies

Tai Chi and Qi Gong are two practices that your Chinese Medicine practitioner may recommend you try to adopt as part of your daily routine. Originally developed as a martial art, Tai Chi is a low-impact (which is why it is often practiced by older people) fitness regime that combines deep breathing and relaxation with a series of graceful, flowing movements. It has been shown to help reduce stress, increase muscle strength in the legs, and improve posture, balance and general mobility. Qi Gong shares elements in common with Tai Chi but is described more as a form of standing meditation than 'exercise'. A series of simple movements are precisely choreographed to create a relaxed practice that both stretches and strengthens the entire body, and helps quieten the mind.

REIKI

What is Reiki?

The practice of Reiki is an original method of healing, developed by Mikao Usui in Japan early in the 20th century. Reiki is a natural healing energy that works on every level, not just the physical, and is understood to promote the body’s regenerative self- healing ability.

There are many different styles of Reiki with many different viewpoints. Here is the working definition of Reiki developed by the Reiki Council through consensus at the time of publication.

“Reiki” (ray-key) is Japanese for ‘universal life energy’, a term used to describe a system of natural healing. This healing tradition was founded by Dr Mikao Usui in the early 20th century and evolved as a result of his research, experience and dedication.

We live in a world of energy that nourishes and maintains all living things. When this energy flows uninterrupted there is balance and harmony within and around us and we experience a sense of well being. There are many variations of Reiki, but in essence Reiki works at bringing us into balance and is believed therefore to reinforce the body’s natural ability to heal itself at all levels, whether physical, mental, emotional or spiritual. It is a tradition that is open to any belief system.

Reiki is a healing process that anyone can benefit from in the normal course of their life. Research using animals and even bacteria suggests it has the ability to reverse stress-induced conditions. It should not, however, be regarded as a cure for conditions. As a natural form of healing Reiki can support and enhance other forms of treatment.

The method of receiving a Reiki treatment from a practitioner is simple. The recipient remains clothed and lies on a couch or sits on a chair and relaxes. The practitioner gently places their hands non-intrusively, on or near the body. There is no massage or manipulation and the whole person is treated rather than specific symptoms. It is also possible to receive Reiki at a distance.

Reiki practitioners are not trained in diagnosis and will not offer any diagnosis or prognosis. If people are concerned about their symptoms they should see a doctor. Clients may or may not feel sensations during a Reiki treatment. Benefits reported by clients/patients include deep relaxation promoting a calm, peaceful sense of well being on all levels.

Reiki is taught by Reiki Master/Teachers, who have trained in the tradition passed on in person from Master to student. Students go through a process of initiation/attunement to the Reiki energy. They are then able to treat themselves and others, not only from a healing perspective, but also as an aid to personal development and spiritual growth.
